The quick answer
To convert satoshis to USD, divide the number of sats by 100,000,000 (one hundred million) and multiply by the current Bitcoin price in dollars.
Formula: Sats ÷ 100,000,000 × BTC price = USD value
At $96,000 per BTC:
- 1 sat = $0.00096
- 1,000 sats = $0.96
- 10,000 sats = $9.60
- 100,000 sats = $96.00
- 1,000,000 sats = $960.00
Use the BitcoinUnit converter above to get the exact dollar value of any sat amount at the current live price. Just select SAT from the dropdown and type your amount.
Why the formula works
One Bitcoin is divisible into exactly 100,000,000 satoshis. This is a fixed rule of the Bitcoin protocol that never changes. So any sat amount divided by 100,000,000 gives you the equivalent in whole BTC. Multiply that by the current dollar price and you have your USD value.
The only variable is the Bitcoin price, which changes every second. This is why the dollar value of your sats fluctuates even when you have not sent or received anything.
A worked example
You receive a Lightning payment of 52,500 sats. Bitcoin is currently trading at $94,200.
- Convert sats to BTC: 52,500 ÷ 100,000,000 = 0.000525 BTC
- Convert BTC to USD: 0.000525 × $94,200 = $49.46
So you received approximately $49.46 worth of Bitcoin.
The dollar value that matters for your taxes is the price at the exact moment the payment was received — not the current price. Always use the rate recorded by your payment processor for tax records.
Satoshi to USD reference table
At $96,000 per BTC (update using the converter for current rates):
| Satoshis | BTC | USD |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.00000001 | $0.00096 |
| 100 | 0.000001 | $0.096 |
| 1,000 | 0.00001 | $0.96 |
| 10,000 | 0.0001 | $9.60 |
| 100,000 | 0.001 | $96.00 |
| 1,000,000 | 0.01 | $960.00 |
| 10,000,000 | 0.1 | $9,600 |
| 100,000,000 | 1.0 | $96,000 |
Why satoshis are used instead of BTC
As Bitcoin’s price has grown, expressing small amounts in BTC has become unwieldy. A $5 coffee at $96,000 per BTC is 0.0000521 BTC — hard to read and easy to mistype.
The same amount expressed as satoshis is 5,208 sats — much cleaner. This is why the Lightning Network, Square’s Bitcoin payments, and most modern Bitcoin wallets use satoshis as their default unit.
How to convert USD to satoshis
The reverse calculation: divide your dollar amount by the Bitcoin price, then multiply by 100,000,000.
Formula: USD ÷ BTC price × 100,000,000 = Satoshis
Example: You want to send $25 worth of sats. BTC is at $96,000. $25 ÷ $96,000 × 100,000,000 = 26,042 sats
The BitcoinUnit converter handles both directions — select USD from the dropdown to convert dollars to sats.
